Most jobs involve carrying out some type of manual task. Support work is no different.

If poorly planned or done incorrectly, manual tasks can become hazardous. We need to minimise the risks involved in carrying out manual tasks so that injuries do not occur.

Work safe Australia say that a hazardous manual task is where you have to lift, lower, push, pull, carry, hold or restrain something.

This could be:

  • a repetitive movement
  • a repetitive or sustained force (where something is pushing against you for a period of time)
  • a high or sudden force (suddenly taking a large or heavy load, also movements that are jarring or jerking)
  • sustained or awkward postures (not standing/sitting correctly)
  • exposure to vibration.

Loading a wheelchair into a car

The following video will assist with understanding the safe procedure for loading and unloading a wheelchair into a car.
It shows how to tilt and shift the weight of the chair instead of lifting the weight of the chair.
These practical tips will help protect your back and body from strain injuries.

This training video demonstrates the same procedure for loading a wheelchair in a more technical way.
