Active Support

Module 2: Every moment has potential

In this session we will cover:

  • What is meaningful engagement?
  • Activities that have moments of potential

This module will take around 30 minutes to complete. At the end, you will be required to complete a short, comprehensive quiz.

Every moment has potential

Every moment has potential means we look at every moment as a moment that has the potential for a person to be engaged.

Sometimes we might feel a little task orientated at work, and that there are special times for doing things like active support.

But, if we apply active support properly then it is an any time and all the time approach, then every moment will have potential.

Please watch this video by La Trobe University and Greystanes Disability Services that explains ‘every moment has potential’.

What is meaningful engagement?

The people we support are surrounded by opportunities for meaningful engagement.

Every part of the day – every household task – and every social interaction in the community, holds moments of potential, however mundane.

Every moment has potential is about looking at the many small steps that make up every task, and thinking how to involve the people you support in as many of these as possible.

There are real and naturally occurring opportunities, there is no need to make artificial ones.

Take a moment to watch this video and see how many moments of potential you can spot.
